Catch of the Day: January 17, 2011 40's Black Velvet and Ostrich Plume Hat

This fabulous forties felt hat features an unusual pleated pinwheel design. Sporting three dashing maroon ostrich feathers, this hat was found on eBay courtesy of MaryMuldoon. This is one of the most unusual and stylish hats I've seen, and it truly makes me long for the days when a lady wouldn't dream of leaving the house without a hat and gloves. The hat bears no label but is a size 22 (there's a contradiction in there somewhere, but I'm leaving it be). Sadly, no dimensions have been posted, so I advise anyone seriously interested in acquiring the hat to wear to write Ms. Muldoon and inquire about the crown circumference. There appears to be grosgrain ribbon along the opening of the hat, and the hat has been lavishly photographed from every conceivable angle. This is especially lucky, because otherwise we wouldn't know how truly fetching it looks from the back, and fetching it is. After 5 bids, the price is currently at $65.00. Catch of the Day: January 16, 2011 Retro Tortoise Cateye Sunglasses

Wholesale-fashion-access had a pair of these that closed 15 minutes after I found them.  I did the obvious thing. I bought them. They have several (as in lots...), so there is no sence in paying 1 penny more than the opening bid price. Found (obviously) on eBay, these retro-60's dead stock sunglasses are actually from the 80's. I have every intention of using them the next time I have driving glasses made. I think they are the cat's frickin' pajamas.  Featuring a classic and time honored cateye design, let's face it ladies, the reason this style has lasted is so long is that it's so complimentary on so many faces. 

They also come in black, if that's your fancy, and I had to hold a brief debate with myself about which ones to buy. I frankly could argue for either choice. Which ever you buy, you'll get no criticism from me. 

Now all you need is a hat and a nice pair of gloves!

Catch of the day: January 15, 2011 Vtg 70's Trench Coat

This classic vintage 70's trench coat is up for bids on eBay.  With the incredibly low opening bid of $19.99. I couldn't pass up this wardrobe staple.  The trench coat is something every woman should have.  It's changed very little since Burburry first introduced them just after World War I.  Every woman wears a trench on her own way, buttoned all the way, a single button, collar up, collar down.  cinched through the D rings, tied in a knot... There are as many ways to wear the trench as the women who wear them.  Tim Gunn says this garment will take you from the grocery store to the opera,  how many coats can you say that about?  Brought to us by the fine people at The KissingTreeVintage. the auction closes on January 19, 2011 at 7 pm eBay Standard Time.

Catch of the Day January 14, 2011 50's Lilli Ann Jacket

The Catch of the Day is so incredibly luscious I'm just furious with myself for not having found it in time for the regular blog.  Found on eBay,  this stunning 1950's Lilli Ann Jacket shows all the fine tailoring details that made Lilli Ann Jackets so collectible.  Look at the amazingly generous shawl collar!  The princess seams make for a fine cut waist and a flair at the hips;  certain to enhance any figure.  The single button closure is somewhat unusual for a Lilli Ann of this period,  and is rather fashion forward, as it foreshadows the loser, more "natural" fit of clothing in the 1960's. 

Made of a wool and nylon blend, the jacket is fully lined and is in splendid vintage condition with no issues to report.  Brought to us by PineHaven2, the jacket is priced at a Buy It Now price of $75.00, though the dealer is accepting offers.  Be forewarned!  Serious offers only need contact her. "I will not respond to offers that are deemed insults, rest assured when an offer of ten cents on the dollar is made,   you are not considered a serious buyer."  I can't imagine anyone assuming you could get a Lilli Ann for $7.50, but someone had some serious gall.  Personally, I find the jacket a bargain at $75.00, but please see past issues of Second Hand News for information and encouragement about making offers.

Catch of the Day: January 12, 2011 Vintage 60's Faux Leopard Coat

Oh Kittens!  The Catch of the Day is Purrfect!  This lovely faux fur leopard coat is from the 60's and is the perfect length for today!  Found on eBay, the label reads, "La France".  The coat has a classic cut,  side pockets, a notched collar and cloth covered buttons.  While the fabric does have a bit of stretch to it,  the coat is only for the teensy among us.  And I do mean teensy.  Please take a moment to read the dimensions of the garment before you even think about bidding.  Brought to us by the fine people at Thriftwares,  this is by far the cream of their vintage crop!

Catch of the Day: January 11, 2011 Vintage Bag, Mary Quant?

This lovely bag has Mary Quant like flowers all over, but does not carry a Mary Quant label, so I am uncertain if it is Mary Quant or not.  It is, regardless, a lovely bag.  29 cm (11 1/3 inches) long and 11.5 (just over 4.5 inches) wide.  Bidding closes this evening at 6:42 eBay standard time.  Mary Quant Fans, get your bids in!

Catch of the Day: January 10, 2011 1930's Bias Cut Dress

This breathtaking 1930's bias cut dress is made of a dark forest green silk with a magnolia flower print of light green, yellow, and white.  Offered on eBay for the discerning collector, this fabulous dress is in remarkable vintage condition, with only a few tiny pin holes which can only be seen if the dress is held up to the light.  I would estimate the dress to be a modern day size 10, or perhaps a generous 8.  As always, any interested buyer is urged to read the measurements as they appear at the auction website.  The lovely shawl collar comes to a bow at the center.  The V cut of the dress at the bodice serves to enhance the bust, and would be most becoming on a small busted woman.  The generous skirt is the type which flutters as one walks.  Offered by 1860 - 1960 the dress is currently priced at $199.00 with just over 1 day of bidding remaining.
