Oh my goodness, darlings! I've been on vacation, so I haven't blogged, but I've found so many wonderful things for us that I'm almost intimidated to begin! Oh my! We have so much to talk about!

Let's start with this amazing and rare Eisenberg dress from the 1940's.

The totally modern lines of this dress are almost deceptive. In fact, I thought I had misfiled the picture because I thought it wasn't a vintage item. The dress is made of an iridescent aubergine silk fabric with a bit of shine to it. The loose bodice is adorned with a large fabric bow on the left shoulder, true to the period.

The dress then cinches at the waist and the skirt features a large swag of fabric that continues well into the back of the dress.

This is a trick still being used by couturiers today and is why I thought this was a modern dress. This dress, like most 40's dresses, closes at the side with a metal zipper that has been painted to match the fabric. There is a faint extra sheen from an iron in this area which seems to be the dresses single flaw. The dress even still has it's original belt, a real rarity for a garment of this vintage.

The dress is a modern size 6/8 and is available from Shrimpton Couture for $525.00, a veritable steal for a vintage Eisenberg in this condition.

I just love this next item. The fantastic bangle bracelet shown above is salvaged from the meat packing industry and is made from a cow's horn. It's eco-chic and wonderful! Offered by Gallerieurbana at Etsy for $50.00. The bangle is also offered in a brown horn, as shown below:

This shop's inventory is full of fabulous and green jewelry. I urge you to look at all their offerings and save them to your favorites.

The stunning Edwardian lawn dress shown below would make such a charming wedding dress that it's enough to make a girl want to get married!

The dress features an exaggerated lapel that is almost like having a second layer to the bodice. It's richly and beautifully embroidered and the very essence of femininity. It splits to reveal a single layer "V" that is more sheer. This is coupled with a doubled, deeply embroidered waist panel that emphasizes the hour glass figure of the woman wearing it.

The construction of this bodice is such that one need not wear a full slip underneath the gown, just a half slip (skirt slip) would suffice. (The skirt is very sheer, though no less adorned with embroidery).

The back, sadly, needs to have the hooks and eyes replaced (no big deal) and features a repair to a hole in the original fabric (big, big, deal).

Below is a second view of the repair on the back or the skirt.

I think this dress is so gorgeous that it's worth it to completely replace the panels of fabric above that strip of lace. Or - in the alternative - one could simply wear an elaborate veil which hangs down the back and covers the repair. I'm uncertain if the repair to the skirt is to the front or back, but the presence of hooks and eyes lead me to believe it's on the back.

If it's important to you that your wedding dress be perfect, this is not the dress for you. But, if like me, you are truly charmed by the dress, then this flaw is really of little consequence and what matters is it's vintage charm.

This lovely silver-toned Crown Trifari necklace is at Etsy. The seller describes it as Art Deco, but it's Art Deco-ness escapes me, I find it rather modern. The silver metal (which I expect is rhodium) finish alternates between a shiny finish and a matte finish. The necklace has been well cared for, is clean, and has no missing stones. Offered by

I am completely enchanted with this faux pearl and glass beaded handbag from the 1930's. Now this is some art deco! The metallic glass beads have taken on a lovely patina, as has the frame of the purse.

The frame and snake chain are silver plate, and the snap closure of the purse features lovely Austrian crystals.

I had envisioned some young lady working for weeks beading this purse in preparation for a prom or another special occasion, but no! Inside on the padded pale pink rayon interior is a label which reads "made in Hong Kong". So much for my romantic fantasies! This lovely purse is at Ruby Lane and is offered by Uniquities Unlimited for $245.00. The dealer reports the condition of the handbag to be excellent.

I had a fit of art moderne ecstasy when I found this next item!

This amazing spun aluminum light fixture in the classic artichoke design was found on eBay strutting it's stuff. It's a single bulb fixture and ships with 6 ft of aircraft cable for hanging. I think it's just modolicious! Offered by royalpacificlighting for a Buy It Now price of $339.00.

This company has a wide array of lighting from the very traditional to the cutting edge, all at very reasonable prices.

This stunning Donna Karan evening gown from the 1980's was found on 1stDibs. I simply adore it's cut, it's line, and the gorgeous fabric it's made of. In fact, I can't think of anything about it I'm not just head over heels over. It's almost one shoulder design is so striking and was very fashion forward for the 80's. The diaphanous magenta silk chiffon is bias cut and covered in beautifully appliance silk flowers and unique square shaped sequins.

The dress has a very low back to add to it's palpable sex appeal.

This superb evening gown is being offered by The Way We Wore for $1,200.00.

It's not unusual for me to seek out jewelry to wear with the clothing I pick out for this blog. I frankly think it would be a shame to wear any jewelry with this gown. This gown is the jewelry. Anything which would draw your eyes away from the artistry of this dress would be sacrilege.

The Way We Wore has such an extensive and fine selection of vintage garments that it would simply be a shame for you not to treat yourself to viewing it. I promise it will be one of the best window shopping experiences of your life.

Also from the 1980's is this gorgeous bronze crocheted dress from Etsy. I love it's artisan, bohemian appeal, though I must admit that I think pairing it with a black hat and shoes was a mistake.

Designed by Allen Schwartz, the dress features a low-cut modified "V" neckline, a tea length hemline and a body hugging style. I don't think there's anything about this dress that says 1980 and not today, though paradoxically it does say, "vintage" in a charming and vague sort of way. It's label claims it's a large, but the model above is a size two. The knit fabric has a great deal of stretch, so I'm going to limit my size advice to saying that this dress is only for the perfect of figure. It's body-hugging fabric will show quite plainly where ever there may be too much or too little of thebwoman wearing it.

That bronze dress definitely needs the right necklace to dress it up, as well as the right pair of shoes. Fear not! I'm on the case for both of these fashion emergencies.

For the necklace, I chose this Victorian charm necklace from Sweet Romance Jewelry.

I love the way the many layers and types of chain will dress up the simplicity of the dress. It's available for only $69.00 and should be a great addition to anyone's jewelry wardrobe.

For the shoes, I chose these golden-bronze stripy sandals from Etsy.

Their thin straps and platforms are oh-so-1970's even though both are back in style. The platforms are made of stacked wood and are remarkably scratch free for shoes that are about forty years old.

Don't they make you want to listen to some Abba?

These sexy retro shoes will beautifully set-off the metallic aspects of that dress as well as being appropriate to dress up any number of outfits, even blue jeans. These are being offered for sale by RevampedResale for $29.95.

RevampedResale also stocks this fun vintage sculptural pave rose bracelet.

The pave rose design would go well with the rhinestone features appearing on the Victorian charm necklace shown above. It's fun retro feel (late 80's?) would brighten most any casual outfit, or even a simple party dress like the bronze one shown above. Offered for only $34.95, I think this piece is awfully fun.

I call this magnificent 1950's dress the "Elizabeth Taylor" dress, as she wore one terribly like it in the 1954 movie Elephant Walk. Found in Europe, this gorgeous dress is made of a substantial cream colored rayon faile with a purple lace overlay at the bodice and right hip. Though it's lost it's labels, everything about this dress says high-end couture.

Sadly, the dress has a spot that is hidden among the folds.

The seller has had the dress dry-cleaned so we can assume considerable effort has gone into removing the stain already. From top to bottom, the stain is 3/4" high. I think it's important to remember this stain is hidden among the folds of the dress. While unfortunate, I do not think the stain is ruinous or destroys the value of the dress.

The dress is being offered for sale by Couture Allure for $325.00.

This dress needs something at the neckline, and as it would sadly be impossible to match that shade of purple in gemstones, I decided to focus on the white instead. I found this fabulous navette necklace from Sweet Romance.

The pearls and rhinestones give the necklace such a lovely feel. I also adore it's sculptural quality. The necklace is available for $79.00.

Any regular reader of my blog can imagine how my heart leapt for joy when I found this Lilly Ann suit! The suit is described as yellow, and photographs can certainly be deceiving, but it looks like a cream color to me. Made of silk crepe, this lovely suit is fully lined, and has ruching on the left side of the jacket.

It has full length sleeves, a shawl collar, and a typical 1940's pencil skirt. I wouldn't be surprised to find that those buttons are bakelite (the seller says they are lucite, but it was not being used for nonmilitary purposes during this time). The skirt has a kick pleat in the back, and a great silhouette.

This fabulous suit is being offered for auction by MillStreetVintage who has their usual amazing collection of vintage goods. The suit is about a modern size 8/10.

With a little more than 24 hours left to go on the bidding, the current price on this suit if $417.00. I expect it to close at over $600, but I've been wrong before.

As this last item has only a day's bidding left, I'm going to close so anyone who may be interested in the Lilli Ann will have a chance to bid, and so that I might accomplish something today besides blogging!

Oh my goodness! Oh my stars! I can't quite believe I've uncovered so many fabulous finds in such a short period of time!

My first find, I must admit, is not really to my taste. Nevertheless, I am presenting it in the event that one of my readers may be mad for it.

This lipstick red leather jacket is from Guess and features such fabulous and authentic details as aged brass zippers on the side pocket and the sleeves. The jacket is a classic and, provided one stays a size small, should see you well through the next several decades. This jacket can be found on Etsy and is being offered by CozyStudio for $150.00.

My objection to the item above? Just as there is a single acceptable source for equestrian togs (Hermes); so also is there a single source of acceptable motorcycle wear: Harley - Davidson. Other than that, it's a great jacket!

I should mention that Etsy also has a pair of lipstick red Guess boots in stock, should you wish to acquire the set.

The next item, I simply adore!

This to-die-for marabou bag is a Valentino original. Featuring rhinestones at the top, a fabulous twisted brass chain, and a turquoise scarab stone for closure, the bag is lined in a luscious tangerine silk with the Valentino label. As the Valentino name has been retired, this item, along with any Valentino product, is highly collectible and should increase in value. The purse, excluding fringe, measures 9" x 6" and the strap is 16" long. If you show up wearing this bag, not only will you be the only one wearing this bag, everyone else will remember that you had this bag.

Also from 1stDibs, is this fabulous tropical Betsy Johnson dress from the 1980's:

This body hugging, spaghetti strapped dress has a low scooped back and is only for the perfect of figure.

This lovely dress is offered by Posh Vintage for the bargain price of $225.00. Posh Vintage has a killer selection and you're cheating yourself if you don't peruse their inventory.

The only thing that Betsy Johnson dress lacks is the right necklace to wear with it. Naturally, I couldn't turn down this opportunity to look at jewelry.

This shimmering, iridescent "glass garden" necklace by Sweet Romance is available for only $39.00.

This vintage 1950s sundress by Alfred Shaheen with the Hawaiian flavor is just beautifully constructed. The sides of the bodice are pleated to show off that hour-glass silhouette, and the three bands across the neckline will enhance even the most modest of bustlines. Found at Etsy, this lovely summer dress is being offered by CTMercatile for $275.00.

I'd wear this with a simple pearl choker or failing that an organza ribbon choker with a silk floral pin.

Also at Etsy, is this fabulous and timeless 80's Jacket from Scott McClintock:

With it's scalloped collar and generous beading with sequins this jacket is just the thing to turn that outfit up a notch. The jacket is made of a luxurious silk (or silk and rayon - no label) velvet, and closes at the waist with an invisible hook and eye closure. Available from LadyVioletteDeCourcy for only $85.00.

This vendor has a small, but fabulous inventory, and I can't encourage you enough to check it out. They are all fabulous investment prices and you couldn't go wrong with any one of them.

On eBay this week, I found this fabulous "new look" dress from Betty Blair from the late 1940's.

Made of silk taffeta and featuring a fantastic mock surplus neckline. The skirt, while not being a full circle, is more than sufficient to accommodate a crinoline. I think it would be a shame to wear this lovely dress without that fullness only a crinoline can bring. The dress secures at the waist, and what a treasure! the self belt has not been lost! The short sleeves have an "I Love Lucy" cuff, and I can't say enough about the fabulous sapphire blue color. If you have blue eyes this is your dress! Offered by CatsPajamasVintage at a Buy It Now Price of only $399.00. As for jewelry, it would be a travesty to wear this with anything but a triple strand of pearls. I'd do a pearl bracelet as well.

I've been browsing the summer bags on this season's fashion magazines, and was thrilled to find this oh-so-fashionable purse on Sense of Fashion.

I should mention that this is not a vintage item, but I am so in love with it, that I forgave it for being new. Called the "La Scala"' this fabulous rafia bag has the perfect profile for the season. It's 12 cm high by 31 cm wide (I know, I can't envision centimeters either). The perfect clutch to wear with that fantastic Hawaiian sundress shown above, as both just say, "summer!". Offered by MirandaBazarre for the bargain price of $75.00.

Also on the "just screaming summer" front is this wonderful gauze mini from the 1960's. The seller doesn't say this, so I could be wrong, but this appears to me to be that wonderfully patterned cotton gauze fabric from India that was so popular during this time. Wear it on it's own, or for the more demure among us, pair it with leggings, but whatever you do, get this great dress! Alas, this is an unforgiving size small, so those of us who have out S days behind us will have to pass. The bodice is smock stitched, and should not be stretched beyond 36" at the bust. Found at Etsy, from AutumnsChild for an unbelievable $27.23!

I generally will not feature more than one item from the same seller in one blog, but when reviewing AutumnsChild's inventory, I simply fell in love with this so-Boho crocheted top.

Adjustable to fit multiple sizes this gorgeous creation can add just that right punch for a simple tank top or t-shirt, or even over a lace cami. Offered at the killer price of only $45.00 Australian Dollars. This is absolutely one seller to watch for those affordable touches to your wardrobe that we all need to give it real style.

This crocheted top would be so lovely with a really retro necklace with a long line...

like this neo-renaissance cross from Sweet Romance for $69.00. (And no, Shelley Cooper does not pay me to pepper my blog with her jewelry. I just love it that much!)

These retro silk plaid shoes are very different from my usual blog fare, but I just simply fell in love with them! From their stiletto heels to the elongated pointed toe, these shoes are perfect for this issues theme of Summer! Made by "Palizio...very New York" (isn't that a hoot?), the shoes are an 8N. I found these on eBay from (obviously) ScorpioVintage for the Buy It Now Price of $79.99. I want to pair them with a crisp tangerine or lemon linen dress for a complete summer look.

This next item is not vintage, but has been created of vintage components.

Totally modern, but with vintage flair, this incredible necklace includes clear lucite ball beads mixed with a variety of multicolored stones and an abundance of gold and bronze chain for fringe. This artist's work (Anita from Shrimpton Couture) has been featured in the German edition of Vogue. Found on 1stDibs for $550.00.

I am just mad for this fabulous blue-green summer halter dress from the 1950's! It is so breezy and summery, and absolutely classic. Created by Kay Whitney, this cotton dress has a simple halter neckline that just slips over the head. The full circle skirt is shown with a crinoline, which is not included. (Roze begs you to get a crinoline!). I found this on SenseOFashion from RedHotVintage for a bargain $99.00. Unheard of in something of this vintage! I'd estimate it to be a size 4-6, but as always, I beg you to check the measurements of the garment against something that fits you well.

This dress fairly begs for a blue green necklace to set off that gorgeous neckline. I first thought fresh water pearls, but went to my favorite source for actually vintage jewelry, ZephyrVintage at Etsy. There I found this jewel, or uhm, rather jewelry:

Aren't they watery and gorgeous? And the clasp of the bracelet has distinctive touches of the Art Deco. These unsigned beauties are from the late 1950's and 1960's, and reminds the seller of Hobe, and reminds me of Lisner. Regardless, we both see high end costume jewelry in these beautifully cut graduated crystals. A bargain at $69.00 for the set, someone should scoop this summery demi-parure! You can see the quality in the perfect cut of the bi-cone (diamond shaped) stones, and the lovely facetting of the round beads. If one were to attempt to recreate these, one would easily spend more than $69.00 in components.

Also not vintage is my pick of the week at Shopping Housing Works, my favorite charitable vintage seller. Housing Works provides housing, medical care and counseling to HIV positive individuals in New York City. This week, while checking out their stock, I was delighted to find this lovely dress by Jenny Yoo.

I just love the exaggerated bow on the back of this merlot colored slip dress. The dress is a size 12, is 100% silk with a polyester lining. It features a back zipper and pleated detailing at the neckline. Priced at a mere $60.00, this is the cheapest Jenny Yoo dress one is likely to find!

Being unable to stop myself from finding jewelry for each find this week, I unearthed this vintage Art Nouveau rhinestone necklace at SenseoFashion:

The seller describes this as Art Deco. Rather than go into a long polemic about the differences between the two styles, suffice to say we have a difference of opinion on the name of the style, but not at all on the value of the find. This necklace would not only brighten up that Jenny Yoo gown, it would also make a spectacular bridal or prom necklace. I studied the photographs carefully and found no dark or missing stones, a happy surprise for a necklace of this vintage. Offered by LaVintageChic for a very reasonable $140.00.

Finally we found this beautifully designed and constructed and horribly photographed Herbert Sondheim original black dress.

I know, I know... Just try to picture this masterpiece (and trust me it is a masterpiece) hanging beautifully on a chic model instead of puddling on this insufficient broom stick. Herbert Sondheim's creations are incredibly collectible and coveted finds in the vintage fashion world. Even on this horrifically inadequate dress form, I can see the mastery of the gathering of the bodice, the fitted waist, the full skirt (which would benefit greatly from a crinoline), and the beautifully articulated portrait neckline. Available at Vintageous, this gorgeous dress has a side metal zipper and features an unusual looped sash which is attached at the front. The dress is in good condition (with one small pick in the sheen of the satin in back). I would estimate it to be a size 6. Vintageous is offering the dress for $215.00, an absolute bargain for a Sondheim.

Would you believe there was considerably more, but I forced myself to edit. The world is just full of good vintage buys for every budget! And I obviously have too much time on my hands!

Oh my darlings! How long I've been gone! But fear not, I have lots of goodies for us to feast our eyes and thin our wallets upon.

If there's one thing I'm an absolute sucker for, it's a good hat with a veil. Add rhinestones and I'm gone. This lovely creation was discovered while tiptoeing through Etsy. The hat itself is made from faile, and the netting features little dots of chenille. Offered by tightsweaterloretta for $65.00.

And to wear with that killer hat? I found possibly The Perfect Little Black Dress. This lovely 1950s vintage bombshell dress is lovingly made of velvet and features fabulous bows on the shoulders.

(I obviously lightened the photo so you could see the details of the bow.) The V neck is featured in both the front and back. There's a slit in the back to ease both walking and showing off your legs. The dress closes in the back with a zipper and a hook on top. I would estimate the size to be an 8-10, but as always, check the measurements at the website. This lovely dress is available on Ruby Lane from Vanity Fair Vintage for the amazingly low price if $45.00. Get it while it's hot darlings! At that price it won't last long.

That V neckline fairly begs for the right necklace to set it off. I decided to stay away from black jewels to avoid the appearance of mourning, and found this perfect pearl and rhinestone necklace (which I happen to own) that I feel is appropriate for any formal outfit.

This timeless necklace is perfect for so many occasions and hangs beautifully. It's name "The Swan Necklace" and is one of Shelley Coopers creations for Sweet Romance Jewelry. It sells for $59.00. A matching Tiara and Earrings are also available. I should mention that Sweet Romance Jewelry is not vintage, though Ms. Cooper's jewelry is made of vintage elements whenever possible. Ms. Cooper is not only a talented designer in her own right,  she is an expert in vintage jewelry.

Being unable to tear myself away from the idea of this outfit, I naturally found some gloves to go with the hat. The world was so much more civilized when a lady didn't leave the house without a hat and gloves, don't you think?

These gloves are an unusual length, being longer than day gloves and just short of being long enough to be called dinner gloves. They would look lovely with a bracelet should you choose to wear one. There is no label of fabric content, but the seller reports that shenbelieves them to be made of some type of nylon, as the fabric has some stretch to it. They are size seven and are in perfect condition. Available on eBay from Jonnyheroes for a Buy It Now price of $9.99.

I shall now tear myself away from the idea of this outfit, despite the lack of shoes and a bag. Alas. Parting is such sweet sorrow.

This lovely late 1950s red shantung silk wiggle dress simply took my breath away when I ran across it at SenseoFashion.

The dress is beautifully constructed with perfect seaming to show off the hour glass of one's figure (or to create the illusion of an hour glass where none exists). The dress is fully lined in silk or acetate, features a kick pleat in the back, and the matching red belt is fully detachable.

I would estimate this dress to be a size 6, but I implore you to check the measurements of the dress against another which fits you well. I own a shantung silk dress of this vintage, and must warn you that you must be certain the dress is sufficiently sized before attempting to put it on. Silk of this age tears as easily as tissue paper, and is completely unforgiving. You will be pulling this dress over your head and it is imperative that you do not subject it to undo stress by attempting to stretch it or otherwise wrestling with it.  I would even go so far as to suggest you have someone to help you get in and out of the dress, and I don't mean your husband!  His calloused hands would - in all likelyhood - snag the silk!

I must admit I do not care for the necklace the seller chose to display with this dress. I would far rather have seen something with simpler lines, something like this...

This simple, geometric necklace has a presence far greater than it's simple lines would suggest.

Behind the rhinestones, the necklace is a simple chain with a clasp in the back. Since the rhinestones don't continue for the full length of the necklace, I would recommend wearing this with your hair down, though allowing the chain to show is far from a fashion faux pas. Found at Etsy among the offerings of Zephyr Vintage for $45.00, a steal for a vintage piece of this quality. Each stone is present and clear and luminous! Need I even mention that this would make a stunning wedding or prom necklace?  

I've had the pleasure of doing business with Zephyr Vintage and can assure you I was stunned by the quality of my purchase.  Prior to receiving my package,  I thought they were really gifted photographers.  They are gifted photographers,  but the quality of their merchandise is really that good.

Now if I can drag you from the romantic fifties to the time of Mid Century Moderne, behold! This fabulous clock from Wesclock.

With it's mod ball shape, it's killer pink face and the great font used for the numbers, it's so mod I can hardly stand it. Just the thing for someone's mid century moderne bedroom. Available at Hi and Lo Modern (the seventh item from the top of the page) for $80.00.

Also of Mid Century Moderne flavor, is this fabulous side table from Etsy's.

Made of what appears to be maple, or possibly ash, the table features three tiers, tapered legs and inserts which are reported to be tin. I have seen many tables like this, but never before have I seen such a table with this tin detailing.

The table is in beautiful condition, and a second is available if you want a pair (something I consider an imperative). The table is available from Hindsvik of Etsy for $85.00 each. This shop has an incredibly interesting selection if you can get past the maple syrup pails. I encourage you to view their items.  These two tables flanking a bed, or a mid century divan are simply divine and should be the obvious next step in some lucky person's decor.

From the Mod to Goth (or possibly Steam Punk), this luscious pinstriped coat dates from 1910. Despite the puffy sleeves and tapered waist this is actually a men's jacket. It would be the perfect "boyfriend jacket" for today.

(This photo has obviously been over-exposed to show the jackets detail). The jacket is lightly striped and enhanced by velvet and braid trim. The jacket is fully lined, but has two places, a small bit under one of the arms and an inch of a side seam, which need to be restitched. Please note these flaws are in the lining only.  None of them show when the jacket is worn.  The jacket would fit up to a size 12, but as a "boyfriend jacket", it would be fine on a much smaller woman.

Available from eBay from Vintage-Hollywood-Shop for a Buy It Now price of $225.00, though the seller is accepting offers, so shoot the moon.  I would consider anything over $150 to be a serious offer (though I am - in no way - suggesting that the seller would sell at that number).

This stunning pink organza dress simply took my breath away. I adore the fabric covered buttons on the sleeves, the finely executed bodice, the matching belt, and the over-skirt concealing the underskirt with knife pleats. It's quite fortunate the belt has not been lost, so often they are! The seller reports the dress to be in near mint
